x THE CARTEL
Chien Champion, also known to parents and friends as Felipe Arriagada-Nunez, is a visual artist from Montreal. Having been bitten far too many times in his childhood by poorly trained dogs with sharp teeth, he decided to tame his trauma by adopting a canine name. It was one way, among others, to ward off bad luck.
Since he was two, Felipe has skillfully wielded a pencil. Just as he sleeps and eats, he also draws every day. He sketches the portraits of people he loves, especially THE BRUTE, who shares his life. He draws the city he lives in, and the cities he visits, from Chile to Japan. He captures moments of joy and celebrations; mourning, which is part of life; significant current events; good meals and movies that have made an impression on him; and always a bit of sport. The one who once clandestinely drew on walls as a teenager is now paid to do so, whether it's at the Montreal airport or for a mural marking a cinema's anniversary. Once, he even drew bagels on shoe boxes for Nike.
With his warm colors and imperfect lines, Felipe does more than just drawings. Through his illustrations teeming with life, he tells stories that celebrate human warmth, with a touch of nostalgia. Because what he wants most through his works is to warm the heart and instill a fierce desire to live in anyone who looks at them, whether through the eyes of a child or not.
And it has been several years now since Chien Champion has been bitten.
Chien Champion collaborates for the first time with LE CARTEL in 2024 as part of the collective textile collection "PARIS IS A PARTY".
