“The function of the artist is very clear: he must open a workshop, and there repair the world, in fragments, as it comes to him.”
—Francis Ponge
Born in France in 1985 and now residing in Montreal, Mateo Humano thrives as an artist who weaves dialogues between eras. Celebrated for his baroque street art, inspired by ornaments from around the world, and his striking paintings on oriental carpets, Mateo blends urban art with the legacy of ancient cultures, creating a seamless bridge between the street and the intimacy of enclosed spaces, the exterior and the interior, the urban and the personal.
After two decades of painting walls across the globe, Mateo has mastered the art of ornamentation, applying this expertise to a variety of mediums: from city walls to ceramics, wood, paper, and even fabric. Painting on carpets has become a surprising yet harmonious way for him to link his practices.
Curious and scholarly, Mateo explores cultural identity and cherishes ancestral wisdom. His female portraits on Persian carpets offer a profound reflection on the connections between tradition and modernity. Ornamentation, transformed into makeup or tattoos, endows his characters with unique strength and personality.
Exhibited internationally, Mateo's works are displayed alongside those of Banksy, Obey, Mr Brainwash, as well as masters like Picasso, Dali, Basquiat, K.Haring, and Warhol. His murals adorn the walls of France, Canada, Argentina, the United States, Spain, Mexico, Colombia...
A regular at major exhibitions, his art is frequently highlighted at the FIAC and Miami Art Basel, demonstrating recognition of his unique talent in the global art scene. Through his art, Mateo Humano invites us on a journey where the past and present meet, where the beauty of traditions merges with the vitality of contemporary art, thus opening a window onto the human soul across the ages.
LE CARTEL collaborates for the first time with Mateo in 2024 as part of the collective textile exhibition "Paris est une fête" ("Paris is a Celebration").
