"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
— By Leonardo da Vinci
Petitom is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Montreal.
A graduate in graphic design at the University of Quebec in Montreal, he specializes in illustration and 2D animation.
Thomas Bertrand held the position of artistic director at LE CARTEL from 2020 to 2024. He is also the author of several designs for the brand including the ''HORS SERIES'', a collection of humorous designs combining a minimalist drawing with a quote of author.
The artistic evolution of Thomas Bertrand is distinguished by a transition from a palette of bright colors to now reduced tones, thus emphasizing the expressiveness of the drawing and the scope of the message of the illustration. It is often with the desire to provoke laughter and always with the desire to get to the essential that Thomas shapes his visual space.
The nickname "Petitom", in homage to Mowgli, the "little man" from the Jungle Book, embodies the simplicity and freedom specific to the artist's work. His pictorial jungle is home to a variety of animals coupled with their connotations which enrich his universe. His human representations are often comical, allowing us to reflect and laugh at the imperfections of our species.
Among his most recurring characters is a stray dog named "DAKO". This character emerged after a residency in Burma, during which Thomas witnessed the censorship and artistic repression exercised by the military junta. For the artist , the stray dog then becomes a metaphor for freedom of expression, a wild and popular individual who barks across borders to share his independent vision of the world.
Constantly evolving, Petitom's images are as many invitations to reflection as a touch of lightness in a world which sometimes shows a gray profile.
